We call it a wheel-walk—an adventure outdoors with our son, whom I push in his wheelchair. As we straddle the two years, and with his birthday fast approaching, I always consider how, thirty-nine years ago (but for a few days), I held him in the palm of my hand. Premature, fragile, and ever so small, he was not expected to live beyond his first night.

He has been my inspiration in so many ways. He has been my tutor and my guide, never knowing anything he has done for me.

He has been the subject of my writing and the publication of my first book. He has influenced the writing of my second book, due to be published in 2026, and the third, currently in draft. He has motivated me to return to the garden and discover ways to help heal his terrors and ease his pain.

Thank you to all those who have inspired my attempts at gardening, encouraged me to write the words I do, and given me your own books and stories to escape into when time allows and needs demand.

Happy New Year, everyone. Thank you all so much for your encouragement, support, understanding, and above all, your friendship.

  1. I can’t believe Marc is going to be 40 years old! Happy, happy, happy birthday, Marc! Sending you love and blowing kisses!

    1. It’s 39 this time Irene, 40 next year, but your are right, where did all those years go, and so fast too. As we celebrate his coming of 39 years old, it is tinged in no small way by the relentless warnings of SUDEP and many ‘experts’ telling us that he will not live beyond 40. Does that give us just 12 more months of his love, and he ours, or will our constant prayers and those of many friends serve to counter this expectation, as they have ever since his first hours in Gods created world. As every day has been a blessing for us so far, every day this year will continue to be a blessing as I pray that Marc will survive against all the odds and predictions and welcome in 2027 and beyond with me as we always have. Thank you so much dear friend 🙂

  2. I love this photo of Marc, he looks happy! Please remember my eldest daughter, Joyce in your prayers. She has been having weekly chemo since December 30th. She stopped to visit today and she is sad because her hair has started to fall out. She is still and will always be beautiful! Wednesday, January 21 is her birthday, she will be 56. I will continue to pray for Marc and his parents! Love, Irene Bush
