The Garden Safari …

I developed this project to engage our son with nature while also developing an interest in photography. Due to his right-sided hemiplegia, he has limited control of the camera, but with a tripod and picture settings set to square or portrait, he manages to ‘find a way’.

The resulting images (though many are discarded, as you can imagine) help him recall what he sees, as we learn together and discuss the many things we have seen. With his poor memory and powers of recollection, we have found that when he sees a picture, those memories come flooding back, and he recalls all the minutest of detail as if he is seeing and experiencing the occasion in real time.

The pictures in this segment of my website are all my son’s work.

Sparrow Hawk.

Sparrowhawks are small birds of prey. They’re adapted for hunting birds in confined spaces, such as dense woodland, so gardens are ideal hunting grounds for them. Adult male Sparrowhawks have a bluish-grey back and wings and orangey-brown stripes on their chest and belly. Females and young birds have brown back and wings, and brown stripes underneath. Sparrowhawks have bright yellow or orangey eyes, yellow legs and talons. Females are larger than males, as with all birds of prey. (RSPB)
